Abstract: A simple numerical example is proposed in this paper to show that the application of the smoothing technique can posssibly result in a sub stantial discrepancy markedly different from opti mal mesh in a convex region. This demonstrates the necessity of aPplying mathematical programming to the mesh optimization.
