ADVANCES IN DAMPING ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF FIBER REINFORCED COMPOSITE MATERIAL STRUCTURES

  • As fiber-reinforced composite are widely used asalternative of conventional materials in the constructions of supersonicairplane, marine, automobile, the knowledge in damping of composites is becomingmore important for controlling the noise and vibration in the structures. Inrecent years the research on composite damping mechanisms and predictionmethods have received extensive attention. This paper reviews recentachievements in damping studies for fiber-reinforced composites at both themacro- and micro-mechanical levels. The effects of some importantfactors such as fiber/matrix interface, interlaminar stresses, andtransverse shear deformation on specific damping capacity of composites arealso summarized. Finally, improvement and optimization for damping areintroduced, and some recommendations regarding future research areprospected.
