THE PROBLEM AND RESULT OF THE 11TH GLOBAL TRAJECTORY OPTIMIZATION COMPETITION^1)

  • The 11th Global Trajectory Optimization Competition (GTOC 11), hosted by National University of Defense Technology and Xi'an Satellite Control Center, has came to an end in November 2021. This is the first time that the competition is hosted by a Chinese team. The problem of the GTOC 11 was inspired by the concept of "Dyson sphere", which was proposed by the famous physicist-Freshman Dyson in 1960, and the task of the problem is to fly by and transfer as many asteroids as possible to a designed orbit, so as to build a preliminary "Dyson ring" with the suppose that the propulsion technology will be greatly improved in the next century. A total number of 94 teams registered the competition, and Tsinghua University Joint Team, ESA Advanced Concepts Joint Team and University of Auckland Joint Team got the first three places after the four-week competition. This paper summarizes the problem of the competition and the final rank.
