ON THE IMPERFECTION OF TIMOSHENKO'S GENERAL POTENTIAL ENERGY EQUATION

Based on the principle of the variation of energy, the potential energy for the lateral-torsional buckling of beams is obtained. It is not the total energy which is different from Timoshenko's general potential energy. Some aspects of Timoshenko's equation are discussed. Its imperfection and limitation of application are pointed out.
