    In order to fulfill the needs for computational speed and capacities, which is incurred in large-scale BEM problem, a PC cluster system is set up based on Linux system and PVM parallel platform. Practical large-scale BEM problems are carried out on the cluster system. The results show the effectiveness and the efficiency of the cluster system.

    The advances of computerized tomography in geotechnical engineering are reviewed in this paper, including the re-constraction of CT image, the analysis method of CT image, the detection of damage in geotechnical materials, the dynamic monitoring of microstructure variation of geotechnical materials, the micro-mechanics constitutive model, etc.

    The Yellow River Xiaolangdi Project is characterized by large scale, important geographic location, complicated geological conditions, strict operational requirements and unique water and sediment regime, thus becomes one of the most challenging water projects in the world. The technical complexity of the project is mainly due to its complicated geological conditions and high sediment concentration of the Yellow River flow. Major technical problems have been solved in the fields of soil mechanics and soil dynamics, rock mechanics, structural mechanics and structural dynamics and water engineering hydraulics, and have also pushed forward the development of the testing and analysis methods in engineering mechanics.

    In this paper the boundary element method and Kalman filter are used to solve the inverse problem for material parameters of orthotropic plane elastic problem. The constants ν12 and G12 of a material may be found with only several known displacements at some observation points. The numerical examples show that this method is valid.
