APPLICATION OF PVDF GAUGE TO STRESS WAVE MEASUREMENT

  • PVDF is a kind of gauges used to measurepressure, velocity, and acceleration. Theprinciple of PVDF gauge issystematically described in the paper. Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) wasused to have the dynamic calibration of customized PVDF gauges. Itshowed that the dynamic frequency response of PVDF gauges were high enough forimpact loading and noise signal was smaller compared with the signalfrom resistance strain gauges. We are used to PVDF gauges to measure thepropagation and attenuation of stress wave under impact loading todifferent assembled layers with different materials by 37\,mm caliber gasgun, including water, aluminum foam, granite and steel fiber reinforcedconcrete. The experiments show that aluminum foam is a good material for energy absorption and water is a nice material to unload when itoverflowed under dynamic loading. We conclude that PVDFgauges are suitable for dynamic stress wave measurement for itssmall size, high dynamic frequency response and wide linear pressuremeasurement.
