    Abstract: Recent developments in the field of machine tools aresummarized, and issues of basic research associated with machine toolmaterials and structures are discussed. Thematerials/structures used over the years in machine systems are reviewed,with emphasis placed upon the application of novel lightweightmaterials/structures in ultra-high precision machine tools.
